I tried to refinance my private student loans and got a decent rate of 4.49%, but it was only conditionally approved based on my income. I sent in my W2s, payslips, and an offer letter showing I made 8,000 more than what was needed for the loan. Plus, I had my dad as a cosigner.

They turned me down because they didn’t count my On-call stipend of 8,000. Even though my base pay plus location differential in the offer letter hit the threshold, my pay stubs showed a measly $78 shortfall for the year. With a six-figure income, it felt ridiculous that they were going to deny me over a tiny $78 gap while ignoring the guaranteed $8,000 from my on-call work.

I thought, no biggie, I’ll just send over pay stubs from my part-time gig at Target to cover that $78. But they shot that down too.

Looking back, I’ve come to realize that LendKey isn’t a real lender like ELFI or RISLA. This felt like a classic bait and switch, pulling you in only to hit you with worse terms. If this is how they run their approval process, I can only imagine what shady practices await those who actually get approved. My advice? Stay away from LendKey.
